Teaching

Since joining the faculty at the University of Kansas, I have taught over 1400 undergraduates and my graduate offerings have enrolled over 170 students. I have chaired 11 doctoral committees and served on another 39 doctoral committees in our department and in others.

Learning from my work with all of these students–from First Years to PhD students–I have developed a comprehensive pedagogy that emphasizes 1) teaching self-reflective learning practices to help students develop measurable critical thinking skills; 2) creating an inclusive, student-centered classroom climate to encourage intellectual experimentation; and 3) promoting deep engagement and belonging across the curriculum.

My innovative pedagogy–demonstrated across a range of undergraduate and graduate courses–has earned me multiple teaching awards, including the Chancellor’s Silver Anniversary Teaching Award in 2009 and the William T. Kemper Excellence in Teaching Fellowship in 2023.

Here is a brief video that explores some of the values I bring to the classroom.
